Please read the rules before posting or commenting

Almost every subreddit has rules, and we do too. We used to get lots of posts about politics, LGBT, what if, and just basic trolling, all prohibited by our rules. We don't allow discussion of race here, because those discussions usually end up with comments that could get our community removed from Reddit. Also, the Rules didn't match the Removal Reasons, but now they do. We added a "Moderator discretion" rule, because it's impossible to create rules to cover every contingency. r/stupidquestions can be a fun and interesting place to hang out, but we had trouble with people trolling us with rule violations. For example, here are some of the topics that we removed:

  • Do you think that if I could shoot laser beams out of my peepee, I could scare bullies with it?
  • Do you think it would be safe to build my child a drone so I can save on plane fare
  • Should I crash my car into a concrete barrier going 90mph without a seatbelt?
  • Is it a good idea to hold a flame up to a 5 gallon can of gasoline?
  • Why does my butt smell like ass?

We would ban the offenders, but they would create new accounts and return right away. So a couple of the users suggested putting in a minimum Reddit account age limit and a minimum karma limit to post. That has made things much nicer for the community. Karma is sort of an artificial number, but it tends to indicate that the owner interacts with Redditors in a positive way, and they appreciate him. What you want is to create posts or comments that Redditors appreciate so much that they give you a few upvotes.

Here's Reddit's FAQ page about karma, and here's more information about karma. If you are new to Reddit and would like more information about how to use it, please visit r/NewToReddit.

We don't reveal the age or karma numbers required to post. They are not very high, though. If you have a post removed due to your age or karma numbers, please understand that you didn't do anything wrong and we are not targeting you. This is just one of the ways that we are protecting our community. All of the blame for this goes on the trolls. New Redditors should be able to interact with the community, but it's too easy for someone to be banned, create a new account in two minutes, and return to trolling again. So we took precautions to make it more difficult for them. It's too bad that it also makes it more difficult for new members who aren't trolls.

Moderators will remove posts that violate our rules. The author is notified when their post is removed, and there's a reason given for each removal. Redditors who continue to violate the rules will be removed from r/stupidquestions. For extreme violations, the banhammer may fall instantly. If you play nice and follow our rules, you may stay as long as you like.

Thanks. Now go forth and have fun!

Why did Freud name it Oedipus Complex when Oedipus stabbed his eyes with disgust upon learning the truth?

He hated what he did , stabbed his eyes and abandoned everything upon learning he married his own mother.

He literally had no interest in her after learning that.

Why is his name used to explain that someone can love their parents in a not a parent-child way ? What was Freud's problem ?

Like why accuse the guy of something he desperately hated ?

People who don’t make your bed in the morning: do you make it right before you go to bed, or just crawl into messy sheets?

I ask because whenever we have this debate, I kind of assumed we’re basically debating whether to make your bed in the morning or at night. I always make it at night: it’s a nice part of my calm-down routine, plus if I make my bed in the morning, there is a 100% chance I will get right back in. But I’ve been wondering, do some people never make their beds at all? Like they get into messy sheets, or maybe they straighten it out a bit, but don’t fully smooth everything out?

Thanks! I’ll be eagerly awaiting your answers 😅

What happens when the head of HR and the CEO get caught together doing something they shouldn’t?

Do they just try to sweep it under the rug like our President is trying to do with his history of pedophilia or will there be actual consequences?

What do you cook if don't have much time ?

I heard many people meal prep for a week on days off. But if someone is new to cooking, what is something they can make that won't take up a lot of time and is actually fulfilling

Can certain behaviors be considered “sociopathic?”

Not sure if this is a dumb question, but it randomly came to mind and I got curious.

What kind of behaviors do you think fall under the “sociopath” category?

I was zoning out and started thinking about someone I know who acts very different depending on who’s around.

For example: They treat me coldly or even mock me when we’re around other people—but when we’re alone, they’re suddenly nice or act completely normal.

I also know someone who does the opposite: they’re super nice and inclusive around others, almost like they’re using me as a prop to seem friendly. But when we’re alone, they barely speak to me or act distant, like they’re not interested at all. Sometimes they become nasty, impatient and start a fight out of nowhere.

I’m not diagnosing anyone— I’m just wondering if these kinds of hot-and-cold, performative behaviors could be a subtle sign of something like sociopathy or just… manipulation?

Genuinely curious about other people’s thoughts on this.

How are tech firings affecting women more than men if the percentage is less?

https://www.pcmag.com/opinions/women-are-hit-hardest-by-tech-layoffs

he wave of layoffs sweeping the tech industry is more of a tsunami for women. According to Roger Lee, creator of Layoffs.fyi, 44.8% of those laid off by tech companies from October 2022 to January 2023 are women. Prior to 2022, women made up just 28% of employees in the industry. This is especially distressing when considering how many women have been pushed out of the workforce completely during the pandemic.

So 44% is less than 50%, thus meaning more men are fired than women, correct?

Do you make the most absurd jokes with your siblings and laugh hysterically?

My sister and I are constantly laughing at the most stupid things we say or do, it's literally nearly impossible not to grin like idiots when we're together

For example today we came up with a joke about how we would look when we turn 30, we would make a bunchy back and imitate a face of a very old person and put one arm to side and bend it on the elbow down, then swing it back and forth while making seal/screeching hinge noises, and laugh our asses off like complete morons lol

She's 17 and I am 20.

Our parents think we're very immature and don't trust us with adulthood tasks lol.

At 5'6.5 and 16, is this a normal height? And how big can I expect to get?

As of writing this post, I'm a late 16, turning 17 in September. Last time I got my height and weight checked I was 5'6.5 and 130.

Guys who were around this height at my age or are around this height currently, how big can you truly expect to get?

I don't wanna get big and bulky since I know 200 is probably well too big for my size, but what would a nice, in shape weight be comprised of mostly lean muscle?

And how much more can I grow? For reference, I'm currently the same height if not a little taller than my dad, and I'm definitely taller than my mom. I think I'm a late bloomer since my body hair and facial hair still have yet to grow.

I'm hoping to squeeze out at least another inch or two and put on 10-15 lbs of lean muscle at least. What are the odds?

Batman beating people

Is it a joke within DC comics that Batman just beats people senseless and relentlessly? I'm watching some of the animated movies and I remember in the live actions him just beating the hell out of people. Currently I'm watching the Killing Joke and batwoman did the same thing. It's actually really funny to me if this is true. Is this a thing for them both or something?

Are there any shows about cops or law enforcement?

I have been thinking, the whole area seems like it would be really good for story telling, just in general. Have they done anything like this?

Maybe it follows cops or legal people in their day to day. Maybe even courts? Or it's set there and the focus is on something else?

How do we know that over 100 billion people have been born and died?

Have we been taking a census since the beginning of human existence? Have we dug everyone up and counted? Is it a very educated guess? How did we get that number?
